Learning Poverty Is a Global Challenge. The Solution Begins at Home.

Every Child Deserves a Strong Start.

Regardless of where a child is born, we work with families and communities to strengthen the everyday foundations of learning by empowering mothers, putting books within reach, and helping families protect the environment at home—both online and offline—that children need to grow and thrive.

The Best Investment in Education Begins Before the First Day of School

In 2022, the World Bank estimated that 7 in 10 children in low- and middle-income countries could not read and understand a simple text by age 10—a crisis known as global learning poverty.

But learning poverty is more than a reading problem. It reflects gaps in the foundational skills children need to learn and thrive.

The first 1,000 days are critical for development, while the next 2,000 days build upon that foundation, shaping language, confidence, curiosity, and readiness to learn.

Think of education as a ladder: the early years establish its first and most important rungs.

When these foundations are weak or missing, every step becomes harder, and schools face a greater challenge in closing the gaps.

Mothers, alongside fathers and other caregivers, play a vital role in building these foundations through everyday interactions—talking, reading, singing, playing, and nurturing.

Empowering mothers as their children’s first teachers is therefore an essential part of addressing learning poverty.

While many factors contribute to this global challenge, one of the most important places to begin is at home.

  1. 1

    Too many children start behind.

Around the world, millions of children lack the early learning opportunities and foundational skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

  2. 2

    Learning begins at home.

Long before formal schooling, children learn through relationships, language, stories, play, and everyday experiences.

  3. 3

    Equip the mother or caregiver.

Mothers need practical knowledge, access to books, supportive communities, and healthy learning environments.

Build a Digital Shield

Help families protect time, space, purpose, content, and mind so technology can support rather than displace learning and human connection.

Activate the Shield
How the three gifts reinforce one another: Empowered mothers create daily moments of learning. Books in the home give those moments stories, language, and imagination. A digital shield protects the time, attention, and relationships those moments depend on. Together they strengthen the home learning environment.

Help Expand the Work

Gifts, donations, and partnerships help bring MAFT to more communities, put books in more homes, equip families with digital shield resources and train volunteers.
